Love in the Lakes

wordsworth daffodils - Love in the Lakes

It doesn’t need to be February to enjoy the blissful tranquility that a Lake District cottage break offers love birds seeking some peace and tranquility.

Love floats all year around in the Lake District, as William Wordsworth himself did:

“high o’er vales and hills”

“Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.”

From ‘I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud’ by William Wordsworth.

From sparkling waters and magical woodlands to majestic mountain valleys, we’ve collected together 4 Lake District locations that are filled with love all year around.

The Port of Ambleside

Waterhead is a timelessly enchanting location on Windermere’s northernmost tip. Enjoy some time alone, heading away from the cosmopolitan vibrancy of Ambleside. Head up Wansfell through the pretty Skelghyll Wood. Although this is just a stone’s throw from Ambleside, this ancient woodland has a wonderfully secluded and tranquil feel. From Jenkins Crag at the top you are rewarded with beautiful views onto a sparkling Lake Windermere below, dotted with sailing boats and encased in greenery.

Taking a shore side view of the port of Ambleside, visit an ice cream parlour. Then take a relaxed stroll through Borrans Park. This is particularly pleasant in spring months when the daffodils are open and cherry blossom in flower.

Pastimes like fishing, canoeing and picnicking are right on your doorstep and are the ideal way to spend quality time together. Step back in time and enjoy a romantic jaunt on the beautifully refurbished Lakeside-Haverthwaite Railway. Then explore Bowness and Ambleside via the elegant Windermere steam cruisers. The Swan Hotel and Spa is right on your doorstep too, for some heavenly indulgence, and a great dinner to boot!

Spiritual Heart

Grasmere puts you in the spiritual heart of the Lake District. Here you are cocooned, with the Langdale and Coniston fells to the west, Lake Windermere stretching south and the silky silhouette of Helm Crag to the north. It is the ideal place to bask in revere for this truly magical landscape. Indeed, for 14 years William Wordsworth made Grasmere his home and wrote much of his best-loved work here. Explore Wordworth’s family life, visiting Dove Cottage and his cherished gardens, Dora’s Field, the Wordsworth Museum and St Oswald’s Church. The little village of Grasmere is imbued in a delightful history, peppered with boutique shops and top notch eateries.

Grasmere is more than just the poetic heart of the Lake District. The walking from Grasmere and around Rydal is splendid and we urge lovers to while away long and peaceful days in this most beautiful of settings. Bob gently together on the miniature Grasmere Water on a little colourful row boat and take a walk with a literary heritage too, enjoying the path up Greenhead Ghyll, the setting of Wordsworth’s poem ‘Michael’.

Your Needle in a Haystack

The blissful valley of Troutbeck is the place to lose yourselves.

Troutbeck village is a tiny hamlet that has all that you’d need for a romantic escape. Although Windermere is only a few minutes drive away, you can safely hide away here in the Troutbeck Valley languishing in the slow pace of this conservation village.

Here you’ll enjoy a traditional walkers pub, The Mortal Man Inn which has enviable views, roaring fires and delicious home-cooked food. In the heart of the village is the post office, shop and tearoom. If the sun’s out, pick up an ice cream or if the weather turns, grab your morning paper, some free range eggs, fresh bread and head back to your romantic retreat to take in the views from indoors. The uninterrupted quiet of this peaceful valley is a lovers paradise.
