On the eastern shores of Lake Windermere, Bowness is a bustling tourist destination with a character all of its own. Contemporary shopping streets lead down to Bowness Bay, where hire boats come and go, and Windermere Lake Cruises depart regularly to Ambleside and Lakeside. There's lots to see in both these areas, and they can be explored without even taking your car.
Lake District bus tours also depart regularly from Bowness village, but if you'd prefer to explore by car you'll find that driving is scenic in every direction. A couple of miles away, the A591 leads right into the heart of the Lakes, taking in Ambleside, historic Grasmere, and branching off to breathtaking locations such as the Langdale Valley - many famous Lake District walking routes are within easy reach.
Family attractions in Bowness include the World of Beatrix Potter, right in the village centre. This famous children's author lived just on the other side of Lake Windermere, in the sleepy hamlet of Near Sawrey. Her home is open to the public and can be reached easily via the car ferry crossing from Bowness. Windermere Golf Club is just outside Bowness, on the way into the scenic Lyth Valley. The lush green landscapes are a delight to explore, with many walking routes and a wealth of renowned Lake District gastropubs. Well worth a try!
