‘We know a bank where the oak trees grow…!’ With awe inspiring views from its elevated location above the pretty village of Elterwater at the mouth of the Great Langdale valley, this rural delight is built from locally mined slate of some antiquity, and sits in a pleasingly secluded spot with the trees and wildlife of mature Lake District woodlands for company. A real treat in any season, a holiday at Oakbank is just perfect for four true Lakelovers!
Set along a private lane on the wooded slopes of Lingmoor, an enchanting little stump of a mountain that gives you superb walking from your door and unbelievable views of the higher peaks around it, Oakbank is aptly named and offers everything in both setting and services that you could ask from our luxury cottages in Langdale. Full of charming original features and character that can't be manufactured, you'll feel at home here as soon as you pass through the pretty slate-roofed entrance porch.
Your gorgeously traditional cottage lounge, with warming wood-burner and dining area, lets you cosy up in comfort when the Langdale evenings draw in, while a separate breakfasting country kitchen, specially made by local craftsmen, is the perfect place to fuel up for your day. With solid wood floors, real wood worktops and a rather fabulous 'Husqvarna' range-top cooker under a slate lintel, this a delightfully quirky and homely room, and also very well equipped by the attentive owners.
Elterwater is a jewel in the crown of our World Heritage site, and a real throwback to Old Lakeland. The pretty little slate cottages cluster around the village green and the well-loved Britannia Inn, which serves real ales and home-cooked food in its thick-walled interior or outside in its blissful beer garden, a precious resting place for weary walkers! The Langdale Valleys offer some of the finest high and low trails in the country, and from Elterwater you can dive deep into Great Langdale and tackle her iconic Pikes above Stickle Tarn, or seek out the gentler delights of Little Langdale and discover Slater's Bridge and atmospheric Cathedral Cavern. We also love pottering along the winding river to Skelwith Bridge and treating ourselves to coffee and home-baked cakes at Chesters By The River!
Back home, a magical little cottage garden, set to lawn and country-style planting, offers a wonderful slate patio with dining set and makes a dreamy spot to pass a drowsy summer afternoon with the sound of bees and birds lulling your senses into sublimity!
We can think of few lovelier spots to spend precious time together, and we're certain you'll be back again soon enough once you've stayed with us at Oakbank!
