Troutbeck Cottages

Luxury Self Catering Holiday Cottages in Troutbeck

The tiny elongated village of Troutbeck in the picturesque Troutbeck valley, is a historical hamlet made up of extremely pretty, white-washed farmhouses, converted barns and unconventional cottages. In fact, there are 26 listed building in Troutbeck, including some beautifully preserved 300-year-old houses. Plus, there is one of the most popular walkers pubs in the Lakes, the Mortal Man  – “Everything you imagined an English Inn would be”,

Troutbeck is a valley of two halves, with the low-lying pastures of Windermere to its south and the rugged landscape of the Central Fells towards the head of the valley. Travel towards the north of the valley and pass over Kirkstone Pass – a scenic route that drops you down into Ullswater and the north Lakes.

Sheltered to its east by part of the Kentmere Horseshoe ridge and the bulk of Wansfell to the west, the houses and winding country lanes coming off the main thoroughfare in Troutbeck, are an eclectic jumble of marvellous Lake District charm

We’d recommend taking on the steep but highly rewarding climb up Wansfell Pike to Ambleside, where you can catch the Windermere Lake Steamers at Waterhead Pier, enjoy a shore side drink in the superb beer garden at Wateredge Inn or visit the English Heritage Ambleside Roman Fort.

Follow the river Trout Beck down the valley to Windermere, where it is one of the main waters replenishing lake Windermere. Most of the head of Troutbeck valley, in the north, was owned by Beatrix Potter who bequeathed it to the National trust. Head east from Troutbeck to the secluded valley of Kentmere and on to Longsleddale,  where you can look for the bridge and other landmarks which inspired John Cunliffe’s Postman Pat series.

Some particularly lovely local vernacular to look out for in Troutbeck village are the drinking troughs dotted along the road as well as the red post box’s baring various royal cypher’s. Cast your gaze up to spot unusual circular chimneys, crow-steps, graded slate roofs and ‘spinning galleries’ that are beautifully preserved here in Troutbeck.
